James in 5 – Lesson 3 – Words Matter
The main idea of what we talked about tonight is that our words matter! Our words should be used to build people up.
Read: James 3:1-12
James 3:2 – We all make mistakes. Not a single one of us is perfect.
Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins. Ecclesiastes 7:20
James 3: 3-5
What is he trying to get us to understand in these verses by using the metaphors of a small bit/big horse and small rudder/big boat?
Our tongues are small compared to our bodies, yet they control a lot of things! Here are our discussion questions from Small Groups tonight:
- What did you think of tonight’s talk? What was one thing that stood out to you?
- Can you give an example of a time when your mouth got you into trouble?
- Read James 3:13-18
- What type of wisdom comes from heaven.
- What do you think it means that these things come from heaven?
- How can we consider making these things a part of the way we talk to others?
Our tongues can be controlled when we use all the “flavors of the one fruit”, the Fruit of The Spirit. Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control. If we do our best to use all the flavors of the 1 Fruit of The Spirit, then we are able to control our tongues.
James 3:9-12
Can we get fresh water from the ocean? Does an apple tree grow oranges? No!!
It is the same for us – if we proclaim to be followers of Jesus but our words do not come out the way the should, then what kind of example are we to those around us?
Have a great week! Hope to see you Sunday, if not before!!
