Here is a handout to go along with the video as well.
There were several things that I pointed out in our discussion on Sunday morning. Here are a few of them:
Covenant – Hebrew (berit) and Greek ( diatheke). A covenant is a “formal relationship between two parties who agree to a set of promises so they can work together toward a common goal.” We observe in the covenants we see in the old testament that God is faithful – He upholds and fulfills His part of the promise. We humans, we fail. We are not able to keep up our end of the agreement. So God sent us Jesus.
COVENANT – “formal relationship between two parties who agree to a set of promises so they can work together toward a common goal”.
The covenants we see – God picks a smaller group from a large group and makes a promise with one of the leaders in that smaller group. Through this new covenant with these groups, He will bring all together.
The main covenants we focused on are also discussed in the study guide above.
1 – The Garden – God and humans partner in the garden – humans rebel – broken partnership
2 – Noah – Promises not to flood the earth again – God promises to be faithful though He knows humans will not be. All is wiped out and now there is this place to all work together.
3 – Abraham – God asks Abraham to trust Him to grow His family – God says that He will bring blessings to the world through his family.
4 – Israel – Abraham’s family grows into the tribe of Israel – Covenent is with the whole tribe – they are to follow this covenant – then they will blessed with this new land.
5 – David – David is asked to lead the people into what is right and just – God promises that one day one of his sons will bring to peace, blessings to all of God’s people.
6 – Exile and The New Covenant – Israel loses their land and is forced into Exile – the prophets during this time keep encouraging that a New Covenant is coming. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel keep assuring people not to give up.
7 – Jesus and The New Covenant – Jesus comes to fulfill all of these covenants from before that were broken.
Jesus – the source of blessing of all nations – reference the Covenent with Abraham
Jesus – the truly obedient Israelite – empowers followers to become obedient through His Spirit – reference Covement with Israel
Jesus – The King from the line of David – The King that will lead His people into obedience with God through The Holy Spirit – reference the Covenant with David
SUSPICION THAT LEADS TO REBELLION
We picked up a new phrase from this lesson – “suspicion that leads to rebellion” – I love this phrase to define temptation and disobedience!! Suspicion that leads to rebellion is exactly what our day to day temptations are!!! Anytime we fail, this can probably sum up why!!! Think about it – every time one of the parties did not keep their part of the covenant, this is why!!!! Same applies to us. Good words – be on alert of what your suspicion leads you to!!
The good news is Jesus!!! Jesus came so that our failures can be forgiven. You can have that forgiveness today too. Do you have a relationship with Jesus? Ask Jesus to be your Savior. Invite Him into your life, as your Redeemer.
Got questions about how? Message me or comment below. I would love to talk to you about the most important relationship ever!!!
